POSITION: Special Education Educational Assistant
LOCATION: Pleasant Hill Elementary or Middle/High School
REQUIREMENTS: Seeking versatile Educational Assistant to support students in a variety of
capacities in order to meet changing needs. Qualified candidates need
associate’s degree or 2 years post high school education. Proficient completion of WorkKeys can substitute for formal education. This position will encompass direct adult assistance for individual students with special needs, special education classroom assistance, general education classroom assistance for students with IEPs, and supervision during times when students are not in class. Duties may also include occasional or daily (depending on the need) roundtrip bus ride supervision and assistance for high needs students who travel to off campus sites during the morning and afternoon routes. Educational Assistants are expected to work collaboratively with staff to plan out the needs of students while being flexible and independent for daily decision-making. Ability to pass Drug Screen required.

SALARY: $17.76-$20.26 per hour

Job Description
Job Title: Educational Assistant – Special Education – K-12
Reports To: Principal
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
JOB SUMMARY
This position assists teaching staff in classroom (K-12) settings by performing instructional and personal care requirements one-on-one with students and in small student groups who are in the District’s Special Education program. Also provides student supervision in various settings.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
- Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policy(ies) and procedures.
- Assists students in the Special Education program, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments including, but not limited to reading, math, and writing groups.
- Works directly with students with a variety of special needs.
- Assists in implementing Individual Education Plan (IEP) requirements at teacher’s request.
- Assists students individually or in small groups to reinforce and follow-up learning activities.
- Attends mainstream classroom(s) to assist students in the special education program in achieving instructional and behavioral goals and providing supplemental support.
- Assists students with tracking assignments.
- Supervises students and maintains discipline in the absence of the teacher during classroom activities in a variety of school settings, on field trips, during lunch, and at recess.
- Maintains safe environment for students at all times.
- Follows prescribed daily schedule as outlined by the teacher.
- Assists the teacher in grading papers, recording behavior data, tracking attendance, and record keeping.
- Assists teacher with formative and summative testing protocols.
- Confers with teaching staff on student progress.
- Assists the teacher in the set-up and maintenance of the classroom, adaptive equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Assists the teacher in scheduling, calendaring, attending, and assisting with appropriate meetings.
- Completes paperwork as requested by the teacher in a timely manner.
- Assists the teacher in developing educational materials (copying, typing, laminating, etc.).
- Assists the teacher in communicating with parents regarding student’s progress and or behavior as requested by the teacher.
- Assists students with managing behaviors, de-escalation, and resolving conflicts.
- Participates effectively at required meetings with teacher and other support staff using appropriate social skills, problem solving, and conflict resolution strategies.
- Assists teachers and students with progress monitoring, formative, and summative assessments as directed by teacher.
- Improves professional competence by engaging in ongoing professional development, including, but not limited to: reading; workshops; and conferences.
- Implements required provisions as outlined in IEPs, 504 plans, TAG plans, and as requested by the District.
- Attends to self care needs of students including, but not limited to lifting, feeding, toileting, and hygiene.
- Administers medication within the scope of District policy(ies), state, and federal law.
- Evaluates student injuries, determines course of action, performs minor first aid, and completes required paperwork in compliance with District policy (ies).
- Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
- Complies with applicable District, state, local, and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
- Maintains positive interactions with students, parents, and staff.
- Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, and community members.
- Attends work regularly and is punctual.
MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Marginal duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
- Attends in-service trainings.
- Attends staff meetings.
- Maintains inventory of adaptive equipment.
- Assists students before and after school as part of Safety Patrol.
- Reports issues to authorities as necessary, animal control, suspicious activity etc.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school or at least one year related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior successful experience working in a school setting or with young children with various disabilities strongly preferred.
- Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict, maintaining confidentiality, listening to others without interrupting, keeping emotions under control, remaining open to others’ ideas, and contributing to building a positive team spirit. Demonstrated ability to successfully work with young children with various disabilities.
- Ability to communicate fluently in English, both verbally and in writing. Ability to effectively present information and respond effectively to questions in one-on-one and small group situations to students, parents, and other school staff. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, IEPs, lesson plans, data, memos, e-mails, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute and apply rate, ratio and percent to practical situations. Ability to draw and interpret a variety of graphs.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use e-mail, internet software, word processing software, and other software programs as determined by the District. Ability to type accurately and proficiently.
- Ability to appropriately communicate with students, staff, parents, and members of the community. Ability to exercise good judgment, work in a dynamic environment and appropriately react to a wide spectrum of behaviors of students with disabilities.
- Certificates as determined by the District. Ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid Card, bloodborne pathogen, and blood spill training.
